12-year-old girl shot in head in Catholic school shooting returns home: ‘Miraculous’

A 12-year-old girl who was critically wounded after being shot in the head during the Minneapolis Annunciation Catholic school mass shooting has left the hospital following what her family calls a “miraculous” recovery.

The Christian Post reports that Sophia Forchas spent 57 days in the hospital or rehabilitation after she was critically wounded on August 27 after a transgender gunman opened fire on children celebrating mass.

Forchas had been listed as the most seriously injured of the survivors of the mass shooting which killed two students and left more than a dozen other students injured.

Dr. Walt Galicich is the Hennepin Healthcare neurosurgeon who treated Forchas.

Galicich told CBS News, “It’s only been two months or so since this terrible event. And to see her walking around wanting to go home and go back to school is pretty amazing.”

According to the Christian Post, Galicich had warned, during a Sept. 5 press conference, that Forchas could become “the third fatality of this event” but held out hope for her recovery.

Images posted to the hospital’s Facebook page showed Forchas embracing Galicich as she left the hospital.

Forchas also received a police motorcade escort as she was driven through Minneapolis in a white limousine.

Forchas’s family expressed gratitude for the prayers and financial donations that have been offered to help with their daughter’s recovery.

The family said, “Your prayers have been powerful. Sophia surviving this horrific attack is a miracle. Her healing progress is nothing short of miraculous; an undeniable testament to the mercy and intervention of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
