AOC unveils articles of impeachment against Justices Thomas and Alito

A group of U.S. House progressives, led by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez (D-NY), have introduced articles of impeachment against conservative Supreme Court Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas.

Axios reports that the impeachment effort is part of broader Democratic backlash against members of the Supreme Court after a spate of rulings last month that angered progressives.

The resolutions accuse Alito and Thomas of failing to recuse themselves from cases where they “personal bias or prejudice concerning a party” and also accuses the justices of “failure to disclose” income, gifts and other financial information.

The measures also seek to tie Justice Thomas’ wife Ginni to what they call “efforts to overturn” the 2020 election. The resolutions further claim that an upside down American flag and “Appeal to Heaven” flag at Alito’s residence were symbols of the “stop the steal” movement relating to January 6, 2021.

According to Axios, Thomas dismissed demands for scrutiny of his financial disclosures at “negativity” back in May and Alito has also rebutted accusations of financial conflict of interest.

The impeachment effort is considered a long shot to remove the justices from the U.S. Supreme Court.
