November 8, 2024
Latino Christians voted strongly in support of president-elect Donald Trump in the 2024 election, according to exit polls.
The Christian Post reports that exit polls of 22,914 voters reveal major shifts in certain demographics likely played a role in Trump’s victory, with the most pronounced gains among Catholics.
Exit polling data in the 2020 presidential election showed President Joe Biden with 52% of the Catholic vote while Trump garnered 47%.
In 2024, Trump saw his support among Catholics increase to 58% while Vice President Kamala Harris received 40%. Trump also received a majority of the Latino Catholic vote in 2024 at 53%, compared to just 28% support from Latino Catholics in 2020.
According to the Christian Post, Biden received 71% support from Latino Catholics in 2020 while Harris received 46% this year.
Brian Burch of the advocacy group CatholicVote, said in a tweet on X on Wednesday, “Catholic voters played a decisive role in the historic victory of Donald Trump and J.D. Vance.”
Burch added, “Further, Trump and Harris differed sharply over the role of religion in America, with Harris sealing her fate by telling Christians they didn’t belong at her rallies, before declaring there would be no accommodations for people of faith on abortion.”
Trump also saw increased support among Latino Protestants surging from 48% in 2020 to 64% in 2024. His support among white Evangelical Christians increased substantially in 2024, rising to 82% this year compared to 76% in 2020.
Meanwhile Harris saw support among that same demographic drop to 17%, compared to the 24% who backed Biden in 2020.
