2024 Sees Decline in Abortion Clinics: 14 States Become ‘Abortion Free’

The pro-life organization Operation Rescue reports that the number of abortion clinics in the U.S. has declined in 2024.

According to Christianity Daily, the report, released earlier this week, shows that 29 clinics closed in 2024 with an additional 20 clinics announcing that they “no longer see patients in person.”

The report also classified 14 states as “abortion free” which it defines as states which provide legal protection for unborn life from conception to birth “albeit with rare exceptions and always for the life of the mother.”

Those states include Alabama, Arkansas, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, and West Virginia.

Florida, Georgia, Iowa and South Carolina are not officially classified as “abortion free” but those states do have “heartbeat” laws that protect unborn life starting around the sixth week of pregnancy when a fetal heartbeat can be detected.

Christianity Daily reports that the trend of declining numbers of abortion clinics has been growing over the past 30 years with numbers dropping from 2,176 clinics in 1991 to 720 by 2021.

The report from Operation Rescue says, “This trend of abortion clinics abandoning the concept of meeting with patients in person emphasizes the difficulty abortion facilities are experiencing securing and retaining abortionists.”

The declining number of clinics may also be due, in part, to a growing reliance on mail-order chemical abortion pills.
