Texas Governor Signs Largest US School Voucher Law to Expand Educational Choice

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has signed into law a historic school choice bill that he describes as the “largest day-one” school choice programs in the country.

Christianity Daily reports that the legislation, known as Senate Bill 2, establishes a $1 billion education savings account created to give families more control over their child’s education.

Supporters of the measure say it promotes educational freedom and empowers parents by allowing tax dollars to follow students to schools of their choice.

Upon signing the legislation, Abbott stated, “When I ran for re-election in 2022, I promised Texans that we will bring education freedom to every Texas family. Today, Texas delivers on that promise. I am signing this law that will ensure Texas families, whose children can no longer be served by the public school assigned to them, have the choice to take their money and find the school that is right for them.”

According to Christianity Daily, the program aims to serve up to 90,000 students, providing up to $10,000 per student to cover private school tuition and other expenses.

Pastors For Texas Children voiced opposition to the law, warning that public funds could disproportionately benefit families who are less in need.

Dr. Kevin Roberts, president of The Heritage Foundation and Heritage Action for America, expressed support, saying, “Texas has created the largest day-one school choice program in the nation, putting the state on a pathway to becoming the best in America for educating our kids.”
