As rescue crews in Texas continue to search for 41 people missing after last week’s massive flash flooding, the White House Faith Office has released a statement calling on people to pray, quoting Psalm 34:18.
The Christian Post reports that the Faith Office statement urged the nation “to join us in prayer for the precious lives lost.”
The statement continues, “Amidst this tragedy, our nation must come together to pray for the victims, their families, and the first responders conducting rescue missions to find those still missing. May God wrap his loving arms around all those in Texas.”
Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha confirmed on Sunday afternoon that 68 bodies had been recovered, including 28 children, with 10 girls and a counselor from Camp Mystic along the Guadalupe River still missing.
According to the Christian Post, Leitha told reporters on Sunday that the search for the missing would continue “until everybody is found” with more than 400 personnel from state, local and federal agencies involved.
The Associated Press reports that rescue crews have had to deal with high water, debris and dangerous wildlife, including water moccasins, while navigating the disaster zone.
Colonel Freeman Martin of the Texas Department of Public Safety told reporters that the recovery efforts have shifted to identifying the deceased and providing closure to families.
The state has also received a major disaster declaration from President Trump, opening up expanded access to federal support and emergency services.
