Trump tells religious broadcasters he’ll defend Christianity against perceived threats from the left

Former President Donald Trump has told religious broadcasters that he will use a second term to defend Christian values against left wing attacks. The Associated Press reports that Trump addressed the National Religious Broadcasters International Christian Media convention last week in Nashville.

Speaking to hundreds of cheering attendees, Trump stated:

“Remember, every communist regime throughout history has tried to stamp out the churches, just like every fascist regime has tried to co-opt them and control them. And, in America, the radical left is trying to do both.”

Trump also said that he had used his first term to do, “more to uphold religious freedom than any administration in history.”

AP reports that Trump repeatedly brought the crowd to its feet as he championed his record on abortion and his appointment of 3 conservative Supreme Court Justices who helped overturn the Roe v. Wade decision.

Some on the left claim that Trump’s willingness to defend religious values reflects an embrace of what they call “Christian nationalism.” They warn that beliefs that God inspired the U.S. Constitution and that the founders intended to create a Christian Nation will erase the separation of church and state.

Tennessee’s Super Tuesday primary election will be held on March 5 and could move Trump closer to securing the GOP nomination.
