Abortion the Leading Cause of 2023 Deaths Worldwide, Analysis Shows

In 2023, abortion surpassed several infectious diseases to become the leading cause of death globally for at least the fifth consecutive year, with more than 44.6 million performed worldwide, according to data from Worldomoter.

The U.S. Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe V. Wade in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization didn’t make much of a dent in the worldwide statistics, with the number of global abortions remaining pretty stable.

According to Worldometer, abortions surpassed the combined death toll from other leading causes (according to an archive of Worldometer data from December 31, 2023.

Liberty Counsel called this a “genocide,” posting on X:

Communicable diseases ranked as the second highest cause of death, claiming over 12.9 million lives. Cancer followed, causing more than 8.2 million deaths. Smoking was responsible for over 4.9 million deaths. Additionally, alcohol use led to more than 2.4 million deaths, HIV/AIDS claimed over 1.6 million lives, and road traffic accidents resulted in over 1.3 million fatalities. Suicides accounted for over 1 million deaths.

The number of global abortions in 2020 and 2019 were a bit lower, around 42.6 million and 42.4 million, respectively, but abortion still remained the leading cause of death.
