Church displays Elvis Presley’s Bible in celebration of 100th anniversary

A church in Suffolk, England is celebrating its 100th anniversary with an exhibition that features, among other things, a bible once owned by rock ‘n’ roll icon Elvis Presley.

The Christian Post reports that Gary Stevens, who pastors Needham Market Evangelical Church, said he reached out to the Museum of the Book in London to ask if he could borrow Presley’s Bible for the exhibition.

The museum is renowned for its collection of centuries-old printed Bibles, written in dozens of languages, including one that was translated into English by 16th Century scholar William Tyndale.

The museum agreed and has lent Presley’s Bible to the church for the duration of its celebration.

The Bible contains a number of Presley’s handwritten notes, according to Stevens, who said, “Under Psalm 11, he has written, ‘In the Lord I have placed my trust and he will guide me.’ Under another Psalm he’s written, ‘Lord send me light to guide me,’ and other things we have like, ‘Deliver me for I am nothing without you.’”

According to the Christian Post, Presley was raised in a devout Christian household and received the Bible as a Christmas present in 1957 from his aunt and uncle.

In a 2022 interview with CBN’s Faithwire, Presley’s stepbrother Billy Stanley described Elvis as a “Bible-carrying Christian” and said, “wherever he went, he took the Bible with him.”

Before his death in 1977, Presley received 14 Grammy nominations and won three, all of which were in the Gospel category.
