First Baptist Dallas Fire Fails to Destroy Historic Pulpit in a Stunning Miracle

A four alarm fire that destroyed most of First Baptist Church Dallas’s sanctuary last weekend, miraculously left a 130 year old pulpit intact.

Crosswalk reports that the church’s historic sanctuary, built in 1890 in downtown Dallas, was a secondary worship center and historic landmark that was actively used until 2013. It was the same pulpit used by renowned pastors George Truett (1867-1944) and W.A. Criswell (1909-2002).

The church’s current pastor Dr. Robert Jeffress called the preservation of the pulpit “a true miracle” in a tweet shared a few days ago on X.

According to Crosswalk, Jeffress said that although the historic sanctuary’s interior was largely destroyed, its exterior walls still stand and the church will rebuild.

The historic sanctuary stood adjacent to the church’s current sanctuary, which could possibly be back in use as early as this weekend.

Executive pastor Ben Lovvorn said on Wednesday, “We’re still hopeful that we’ll be able to worship here on our campus this coming Sunday. We don’t know if that’s going to be possible yet. And in fact, we won’t know that until later in the week. What we do know is we’re going to be together this Sunday. So that will either be here in our worship center on the campus of First Baptist Dallas, or we’ll return to the Dallas Convention Center.”
