A beloved municipal judge in Providence, Rhode Island whose judicial work was marked by kindness and compassion has died peacefully at the age of 88.
The Christian Post reports that Frank Caprio, whose unique brand of compassion was featured in the “Caught in Providence“ television series, succumbed to pancreatic cancer earlier this week.
Caprio’s passing was announced on Wednesday by his son David who said, “It is with profound sadness that I share the news that my father, Judge Frank Caprio, passed away today peacefully surrounded by family and friends after a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.”
The judge, who was a devout Catholic, had spoken of his faith and asked supporters to pray for him in a video that was posted on Tuesday.
In that video, Caprio said, “Last year I asked you to pray for me, and it’s very obvious that you did because I came through a very difficult period. Unfortunately, I’ve had a setback. And I’m back in the hospital now, and I’m coming to you asking you again to remember me in your prayers once more.”
Caprio added, “I’m a great believer in the power of prayers. I think the Almighty above is looking over us. So remember me, please.”
According to the Christian Post, Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee recognized the judge as a state “treasure” and ordered that flags at all state agencies be flown at half-staff in Caprio’s honor.
Caprio had served as chief municipal judge in Providence and had also served as the former chairman of the Rhode Island Board of Governors, a position he was re-appointed to 6 times.
