Georgia School Shooting Tragedy Gains Support from Local Community and Religious Leaders, $200,000 Raised on GoFundMe

Church congregations near the Winder, Georgia school where four people were shot and killed earlier this week are reaching out to support the community.

Crosswalk reports that 14-year-old Colt Gray is charged with killing two teachers and two students and wounding nine others at Apalachee High School about an hour northeast of Atlanta.

According to the Atlanta Constitution, Gray had previously been investigated by law enforcement for threatening a shooting.

The shootings have brought together numerous church congregations whose members have ties to the school, including students, teachers and coaches.

Church and Christian leaders urged prayer for the families.

Evangelist Franklin Graham said, “Join me in praying especially for those who lost loved ones & for those injured in this senseless act of evil. May God’s hand of comfort be on them.”

Pastor Jason Britt of Bethlehem Church in Winder told the Baptist Press: “God is close to the brokenhearted, and we want to communicate that. We live in a world of evil and brokenness. This is a sober reminder that we see it up close. But our hope is in the Gospel, which we believe is a rescue from pain.”

Area churches have also come together to spearhead fundraising efforts for the victims’ families.

According to Crosswalk, in less than 24 hours, more than $200,000 was raised on GoFundMe to assist the surviving family members.
