JD Vance assures conservative Christians they ‘have a seat at the table’ in Republican Party

While some Christian conservatives may have concerns with the Republican Party platform, GOP vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance is assuring them that they are important to the Republican Party.

The Christian Post reports that Vance spoke to the Faith & Freedom Coalition Thursday morning, after accepting the GOP vice presidential nomination at the Republican National Convention. A number of conservative groups have expressed reservations concerning the party’s new platform which softens the GOP stance on issues like abortion and same-sex marriage.

Vance told the Faith & Freedom Coalition, “There has been a lot of rumbling in the past few weeks that the Republican Party of now, the Republican Party of the future, is not going to be a place that’s not welcoming to social conservatives.”

Vance continued, “From the bottom of my heart, I want to say that is not true. Social conservatives have a seat at this table, and they always will, so long as I have any influence in this party and President Trump, I know, agrees.”

Last week, the GOP approved a newly revised Republican Platform that included a softening of the party’s stance on abortion by leaving the matter to the states as well as removing any overt opposition to same-sex marriage.

Vance explained that Trump sees politics as “the art of the possible,” saying, “what can we accomplish in the here and now” and “how do we advance the ball one yard before we advance it 10 yards before we advance it to a touchdown?”

Several other conservative groups had expressed concern over what they see as a watering down of pro-life principles in the party platform.
