Miracle or science?: ‘Investigating the Supernatural’ doc explores healings that defy explanation

A new documentary produced by the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) is taking an in-depth look at the question of whether miracles still happen today.
The Christian Post reports that the film “Investigating the Supernatural: Miracles” features firsthand testimonies, scientific scrutiny and theological reflections as it offers stories of miracles that medicine is unable to explain.
Veteran investigative journalist Billy Hallowell says he initially had envisioned a three-part TV series exploring miracles, angels, demons, Heaven and Hell but the project soon become something more profound.
Hallowell told the Christian Post, “I really feel like it was a God project. Not to be cliché, but you have projects where they come out of nowhere … before you know it, you’re filming.”
In the film, the viewer is taken from hospital rooms to prayer meetings to university labs while being shown well-documented cases that challenge conventional wisdom.
One case in the documentary is that of Dr. Josh Brown, a neuroscientist whose brain tumor miraculously disappeared following a period of focused prayer and spiritual intervention.
Brown and his wife Candy, who is a physician, began as skeptics but now are leading academic studies and analyzing data on miraculous healings.
Hallowell recounted, “They said, ‘Look, we were Christians going into this tumor diagnosis, but we didn’t believe in miracles.’ Their experience obviously changed all of that.”
Though the film focuses primarily on miracles, it also explores the harder questions, including the times when patients experience disappointment and heartbreak.
Hallowell noted that, “Even Lazarus died after he was raised in the Bible. Miracles will run out at some point, but that doesn’t mean they’re not happening.”
“Not everybody gets healed,” the filmmaker added. “That is a very difficult, painful thing … but we’re called to trust in God’s plan, no matter what the outcome, while at the same time believing that healing is possible.”
