Most churchgoers don’t think Bible has clear teachings about homosexuality, transgenderism: poll

A new study from the Family Research Council, in conjunction with the Cultural Research Center at Arizona Christian University, shows that many churchgoers don’t believe the Bible has clear and decisive teachings about homosexuality and transgenderism.

The Christian Post reports that the “Social Issues and Worldview” survey was released on Monday and is causing concern that some churches are failing to effectively communicate Bible teachings.

The findings are based upon a July 2025 survey of 1,003 adults who say they regularly attend church.

51% of respondents said the Bible had “clear and decisive” teachings about hot-button social issues like abortion, though that number was down from 65% who said the same thing just two years ago.

Roughly 21% of respondents in the 2025 survey said the Bible’s teachings on abortion were “unclear or ambiguous” with 17% saying the Bible “does not address the topic” and another 11% saying they don’t know whether the Bible even addresses the issue.

According to the Christian Post, 59% of churchgoers said the Bible was “clear and decisive” on the matter of religious liberty while 20% said they consider the Bible “unclear or ambiguous” on the subject.

A large majority of respondents agreed that the Bible has “clear and decisive” teachings on the definition of a legitimate marriage, while 19% found the Bible to be “unclear or ambiguous” on what marriage is.

Family Research Council President Tony Perkins told the Christian Post, “Many pastors, many churches are not systematically teaching the word of God. And that’s really what we’ve got to get back to.”

Perkins added, “I think people, some pastors are afraid they’re going to offend or lose people by … addressing these controversial issues,” he continued. “And the result is it’s created a vacuum that is being filled by the broader culture in the media. So that’s what’s shaping the worldview of many Christians.”
