Nearly half of voters think it’s likely Biden will be replaced as nominee, a new poll shows

Politico reports that nearly half of American voters surveyed say it’s likely that Joe Biden will be replaced as the Democratic presidential nominee due to concerns over his health. The poll was conducted by Monmouth University and also shows nearly a third of those questioned believe Donald Trump could lose the Republican nomination.

Biden’s health and cognitive abilities have come under question since the release last week of Special Counsel Robert Hur’s report that described the president’s mental stamina as “poor.”

The Monmouth study says 51% of voters were confident in Trump’s mental capacity and physical stamina while only 32% were able to say the same for Biden. The study shows a clear shift in voter opinion from a 2020 study conducted months before the last presidential election.

In 2020, just 45% of voters felt confident in Trump’s stamina while more than half said they felt the same about Biden’s stamina.

According to Politico, 91% of Democrats surveyed in the summer of 2020 had confidence in Biden’s physical and mental stamina. That number dropped significantly in the most recent poll with only 72% expressing confidence in Biden’s health.

The poll was conducted by telephone between Feb 8-12 and surveyed 902 adults, including 822 registered voters. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.3 percentage points.
