Supreme Court ruling may create ‘unavoidable conflict’ between religious liberty, LGBT ideology, group warns

The American Family Association (AFA) is warning that a U.S. Supreme Court decision on Tennessee’s law banning sex-change procedures for minors may have long-term implications for religious liberty.

The Christian Post reports that Trey Dillinger, a Senior Fellow at the AFA, says that a ruling against the Tennessee law could set a precedent that pits Christian values against LGBT ideology.

Dillinger explained, “There is an unavoidable conflict between the Christian faith and the radical trans agenda. Trans identity politics is just the latest manifestation of the age-old tendency to make an idol of one’s own desires, to set oneself up as one’s own god.”

While a ruling isn’t expected until next year, Dillinger suggested that constitutionalizing transgenderism could have serious impact on religious freedoms, especially for Christian parents with a child whose gender identity conflicts with their faith.

Dillinger cited the case of Texas father Jeff Younger who has been fighting a bitter custody battle with his ex-wife due to her efforts to get their son to identify as a girl.

While the Associated Press reports that the conservative majority of the court appears ready to uphold Tennessee’s law protecting minors from puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones and mutilating surgeries, there is significant pushback from certain progressive justices.

In particular, Justice Sonia Sotomayor equated body-mutilating surgeries with the risks of taking over-the-counter medications and Justice Ketanji Brown-Jackson compared the Tennessee law to laws forbidding interracial marriage.
