An new documentary, directed by Tim Mahoney and produced by Douglas Maddox, seeks to restore faith by and knowledge of history by making the case that divine providence played a role in the founding of America.
The Christian Post reports that “The American Miracle: Our Nation is No Accident,” will open in theaters around the nation in early June.
According to Mahoney, “This is a story worth telling. As we approach our 250th anniversary, it’s clear many Americans, especially younger generations, don’t know their history. That’s a problem.”
Mahoney, who is best known for the “Patterns of Evidence” documentary series, cited a poll that shows only 1 in 3 college students would pass a basic citizenship test.
Based on Michael Medved’s bestselling book, the film focuses on the early life and military service of George Washington, highlighting a number of near-death experiences that Mahoney and Medved say suggests divine protection.
Mahoney said, “George Washington has a very significant role in how Providence protected him, because when he was a young man, people were noticing that God must have His hand on him because he was spared [many times]. Almost drowning one time, being shot at multiple times, there were many witnesses of that.”
The film also explores the moment when Benjamin Franklin called for prayer to end division among delegates to the Continental Congress and, within days, agreement was reached on forming a unified nation.
The filmmakers say the documentary explores God’s role in America’s founding history and, as Mahoney explains, “Providence means the presence of God. This film shows that presence in action.”
Mahoney added, “When we forget our history, we risk losing it. That’s what this film is about. It’s not just for history buffs. It’s for anyone who wants to understand why this country exists. We’re telling the real story, and we hope it reminds people of what matters.”
According to the Christian Post, the film features appearances by Pat Boone, Kevin Sorbo, Nicole C. Mullen, Cameron Arnett, and James Arnold Taylor as well as commentary from Joseph Ellis, Richard Dreyfuss, Akhil Reed Amar, Lord Andrew Roberts and Jana Novak.
