President Donald Trump affirmed his administration’s commitment to upholding religious liberty on Monday during a speech at the Museum of the Bible.
The Christian Post reports that Trump’s remarks took place at the second annual meeting of the White House Religious Liberty Commission.
Speaking to a packed house of more than 500 attendees, President Trump talked about the role that Christian faith has played in U.S. history and outlined steps that his administration is taking to defend the influence of Christianity in American life.
Trump told those in attendance that, “We are one nation under God, and we always will be,” and added, “To have a great nation, you have to have religion.”
Trump spoke of defending religious rights and restoring the nation’s religious identity, saying, “When faith gets weaker, our country seems to get weaker. When faith gets stronger, as it is right now … good things happen for our country. It’s amazing the way it seems to work that way.”
The White House Religious Liberty Commission is chaired by Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and includes evangelists Franklin Graham and Paula White; former HUD Secretary Dr. Ben Carson; author Eric Metaxas; and Roman Catholic Cardinals Timothy Dolan and Robert Barron.
According to the Christian Post, Trump also announced that the U.S. Department of Education, the workforce development program of which is reportedly being moved to the U.S. Labor Department, is planning to implement guidance to protect prayer in public schools.
A prayer was offered by Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Scott Turner, who rededicated the nation to God ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary.
Trump also announced the White House’s America Prays initiative which calls upon Americans of faith to unite in prayer as the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence approaches next year.
Trump said, “Next year, we will celebrate 250 years since that Declaration was signed. As part of the grand commemoration … we’ve invited America’s great faith communities to pray for our nation, for our people and for peace in the world.”
