Trump’s Bible endorsement draws mixed reactions from Christians

The Christian Post reports that former president Donald Trump’s Holy Week promotion of a leather-bound “God Bless America Bible” is drawing mixed reactions among Christian believers.

The Bible, which Trump is promoting in conjunction with singer Lee Greenwood, features the King James Version of the scripture along with the U.S. Constitution, Bill of Rights, Declaration of Independence, the Pledge of Allegiance and the handwritten chorus to Greenwood’s song “God Bless the USA.”

According to the Christian Post, the former president’s endorsement brought swift pushback from progressive Christian leaders and varied reactions among social conservatives.

Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council said he supports Trump’s promotion of the Bible if it encourages someone to read it.

Perkins stated, “That is great news! The truths of the Bible transform lives. A daily dose of the Bible is the best anti-anxiety medicine you will find. For those getting into the Word, I’d recommend checking out Family Research Council’s daily Bible reading plan, which will take you through the Bible in two years.”

Andrew T. Walker, who serves as a fellow at the Washington-based think tank Ethics and Public Policy Center, said that, “the Bible is not a symbol of American identity even while we proudly herald the Bible-influenced shape of American life and values.”

The bible’s website states that Trump is not making money from sales of the Bible.

The website notes that it is “not owned, managed or controlled by Donald J. Trump, The Trump Organization, CIC Ventures LLC or any of their respective principals or affiliates. GodBlessTheUSABible.com uses Donald J Trump’s name, likeness and image under paid license from CIC Ventures LLC, which license may be terminated or revoked according to its terms.”

Trump has increasingly made the growing anti-Christian sentiment in the U.S. one of the cornerstones of his 2024 campaign.
